Thanking the Friends of Friends

Friends of Hospice is a grassroots community effort supported by nine organizations and funded by private donations, the California Hospice Foundation, and professionals who have donated their services.

The Friends of Hospice coalition includes the following organizations:

  • American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.

  • Butte-Glenn Medical Society is an affiliate of the California Medical Association, whose mission is, in part, to promote the science and art of medicine, the care and well-being of patients, the protection of the public health, and the betterment of the medical profession.

  • Butte Home Health and Hospice is a non-profit, community-owned home health and hospice provider that serves Butte, Glenn, Tehama, Colusa, Shasta, Sutter, and Yuba counties and is licensed by the State of California and certified by Medicare.

  • California Hospice Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable foundation focused on its mission to improve access to quality hospice and palliative care services through research, education and public awareness.

  • Chico Area Interfaith Council promotes worship, dialogue and cooperative events among area faith groups so that they may express, through fellowship, cooperation, action, and service the essential unity of God's people.

  • CSU Chico School of Nursing offers programs leading to bachelor's and master's degrees in nursing, affiliated with California State University, Chico.

  • Enloe Medical Center Hospice, a program of Enloe Medical Center, is a non-profit service that offers a special kind of care for people who are facing the last months of life. Its dedicated team strives to relieve pain, promote comfort, and enhance the quality of remaining life in a familiar environment with family and friends.

  • Paradise Hospice, a department of Feather River Hospital, is a not-for-profit provider that aims to improve the quality of life – physical, social, psychological, and spiritual – for terminally-ill people of all ages during the last months of their lives. The Paradise Hospice House, a state-of-the-art facility with six private rooms, also provides around-the-clock inpatient care in a homelike setting to all eligible individuals needing hospice care.

  • Passages Adult Resource Center, which is affiliated with CSU Chico and the Area Agency on Aging, serves seniors, persons with disabilities and their caregivers in Butte, Colusa, Glenn, Plumas and Tehama counties. Among other services, the Center provides guidance and assistance with searching for community resources, governmental benefits, care in the home, and financial management.

Professionals who made it happen

Communicating about hospice is difficult. We don’t read about hospice often, and few people talk about it. The Friends of Hospice coalition is trying this new communication approach because other traditional approaches haven’t worked. Awareness and understanding of hospice as an option remain low. Research indicates that most people rely on word-of-mouth information when facing serious health issues. This campaign is an attempt to mobilize people in Butte, Glenn and Tehama counties who have been touched by hospice. We hope that they will become an extensive person-to-person network that can build awareness of hospice, one person at a time. If the program is successful, we hope to expand it to other California communities.

The program has evolved from idea to reality through the generous support of individual donors, and through the hard work and talent of many professionals who have donated services, including:

  • California State University, Chico, Department of Journalism (Patty Youngclaus, Ashley Carter, Candace McCarty, Lindsey Qualman, and Debra Johnson)

  • Liz Clark, Acting Director, Market Analytics, Blue Shield of California, San Francisco

  • Lynne Cunningham, Cunningham Associates, Sacramento

  • Dana Davies, Consultant, Santa Rosa

  • Pat Davis, Pat Davis Design, Sacramento

  • Robert Deen, formerly of Deen and Black, Butte Meadows

  • Suzane Henderson, Consultant, Sacramento

  • James Jennings, Consultant, Kilauea, Hawaii

  • Wendi Taylor Nations, Executive Vice President, Porter Novelli, Chicago

  • Gary Paolinelli, Consultant, Sacramento

  • Valerie Peck, The East Bay Group, Oakland

  • Betsy C. Stone, Davis
